Course Overview

Develop practical skills to help people make their own decisions, express their preferences and have greater choice and control over the things that affect their everyday lives.

Why take this course?

Everyone makes decisions differently, and some people may need more support than others to understand their options, communicate what they want and make an informed choice.

For people with intellectual disability or acquired brain injury, the focus shouldn’t simply be “Can this person make the decision?” A better question is “What support could help this person make the decision?”

This four-hour eLearning explores practical, evidence-based approaches that can be used by anyone supporting a person with intellectual disability or acquired brain injury.

Using the La Trobe Support for Decision Making Practice Framework, you’ll learn how to provide the right level of assistance without unnecessarily taking over the decision-making process.

The course focuses on turning supported decision making into everyday practice — helping people understand their options, communicate their preferences and have a genuine say in how their lives are lived.
