Course Overview
Cultural safety is not achieved by memorising traditions or treating everyone from the same background in the same way. It begins with understanding what identity, culture, family, language and belonging mean to the individual participant.
This course helps SIL support workers recognise how personal assumptions, unconscious bias and the power held by services can affect everyday support. It explores cultural humility, respectful communication, language access, family and community involvement, intersectionality and culturally safe shared living.
Workers will learn how to respond appropriately to racism and discrimination, arrange qualified interpreters for sensitive discussions and support cultural practices without relying on stereotypes. The course also provides practical guidance for repairing trust when mistakes occur.
The module reinforces that cultural safety is determined by the participant’s experience. Workers must listen, reflect and adapt their practice so each person feels respected, included and able to maintain the identities and relationships that matter to them.
