Course Overview

Eating disorders are serious mental-health conditions that can affect a person’s physical health, emotional wellbeing and ability to participate in everyday life. They can affect people of any age, gender, background or body size and should never be treated as a lifestyle choice or judged by appearance alone.

This course helps disability support workers recognise changes in eating patterns, routines, mood and physical wellbeing that may require further attention. It explains how to communicate without commenting on weight, shape, calories, portions or appearance.

Workers will learn how to provide calm and consistent mealtime support using participant-specific plans, while avoiding pressure, shame, bargaining, surveillance and staff-created food rules.

The module also explores ARFID, sensory and disability-related food needs, professional boundaries, objective documentation and recovery-oriented support. Particular attention is given to recognising physical deterioration, responding to serious mental-health concerns and obtaining clinical or emergency assistance when a situation exceeds the worker’s role.
