Course Overview
Schizophrenia can affect how a person interprets information, communicates, experiences their surroundings and manages everyday activities. These experiences vary considerably, and a person should never be defined by their diagnosis.
This course provides support workers with practical guidance for responding to voices, unusual beliefs, changes in communication and signs that a participant may require additional assistance. It explains how to acknowledge distress without arguing, dismissing the person or reinforcing an experience as fact.
Workers will learn how to use clear communication, reduce unnecessary stimulation, support medication routines within their role and recognise meaningful changes from a participant’s usual presentation.
The module also explores recovery-oriented support, daily living skills, choice and control, professional boundaries, crisis escalation and objective documentation. The focus remains on providing respectful, consistent support that strengthens independence, participation and quality of life.
