Course Overview

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person experiences, processes and responds to the world around them. Every autistic person has their own communication style, sensory profile, strengths, preferences and support needs.

This module provides disability support workers with practical guidance for delivering respectful, individualised support. It explores communication, sensory processing, routines, executive functioning, masking, distress, meltdowns and shutdowns.

Workers will learn how to reduce unnecessary barriers, respond appropriately to signs of overload and support choice, consent, regulation and meaningful participation without taking control away from the person.
